From May 13 to 17, 2024, I attended the 16th Plenary Meeting of ISO Technical Committee 268 on Sustainable Cities and Communities in Beijing. Around one hundred delegates joined — some in the room, some through screens — representing a shared conviction that the places we live in deserve better metrics, better frameworks, and better standards.

The Committee's mandate is deceptively simple: what makes a city sustainable, and how do we measure it? The reality is anything but simple. Sustainability in an aging European city looks nothing like sustainability in a rapidly expanding Asian metropolis. Climate, culture, density, history — every variable reshapes the answer.

Beyond the formal sessions, the host organized three parallel events that enriched the week. The International Sustainable Cities Standards Alliance (ISSCC) held its 2024 annual conference, bringing together municipal leaders and technical experts to share what standards look like on the ground. A separate exchange on sustainable port cities explored the unique challenges faced by urban centres where land meets water and commerce meets community.

The most vivid experience, however, was the technical visit to Beijing Future Science City. Walking through a district designed from scratch as a laboratory for urban innovation, you could feel the ambition — not just to build a technology park, but to prototype an entire way of living. Smart grids, green buildings, autonomous transit corridors. It is one thing to write standards about sustainable cities. It is another to walk through one being built to test them.
That, in the end, is what TC268 is about. Not abstract documents, but places. Not checklists, but lives.
